RAEng Google DeepMind Research Ready Summer Internships 2025

Logos.png
  • Google DeepMind Research Ready is a pioneering new scheme supporting UK universities to deliver research placements that provide undergraduate students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented groups within engineering with research experience in artificial intelligence (AI), giving them the tools and opportunities to excel in the field of AI research.

  • The scheme is a partnership between the Royal Academy of Engineering, Google DeepMind and The Hg Foundation. It is funding up to 120 paid AI research placements in summer 2025, hosted by 12 UK universities.

  • It aims to widen participation in AI research by addressing barriers encountered by undergraduates from socioeconomically disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds in progressing to advanced degrees and careers in AI. In doing so, it will build a stronger, more diverse AI research community that can bring unique perspectives and solutions to the field.

  • The programme will support eligible undergraduates to improve their knowledge of the different areas of AI, build their research expertise, understand the routes into different AI careers, and build confidence in taking the next steps in their education or career journey in AI.

Our interns have now joined us to start the programme!

This scheme was open to current undergraduates or recent graduates who have the potential to become the future of research in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. See our eligibility criteria for more details.

The 2025 Research placements are supported by Google DeepMind, the Hg Foundation and the Royal Academy of Engineering under the Google DeepMind Research Ready scheme and have been made possibly with additional funding and support from The University of Manchester and the ELLIS Manchester Unit.

This programme is run by the Centre for AI Fundamentals and the Department for Computer Science at The University of Manchester and involves a paid 8-week research internship taking place between 16th June and 8th August 2025. Interns will work with a University of Manchester researcher on a project related to AI.

Alongside their research projects, interns can also attend:

  • talks from academics working on AI,

  • workshops on research skills, and

  • information, advice, and guidance sessions covering topics such as postgraduate applications, wellbeing, and career advice.

Interns are not required to have any previous research experience, however those who have an interest in postgraduate study will benefit most from this programme.

The programme is designed to:

  • provide an opportunity to experience life as a postgraduate researcher at the University of Manchester;

  • develop research skills;

  • enhance ability to make a competitive application for postgraduate courses and funding;

  • highlight opportunities for postgraduate study and research careers in AI;

  • provide the opportunity to engage with inspiring research staff and students.

Manchester has been named as one of 25 global destinations to be included in the Where to Go 2024 list by prestigious US travel publication AFAR, has been named in the New York Times’ 52 Places to Go list for 2024 and is the only UK city in National Geographic's influential ‘Best of the World’ list which annually sets out 25 of the must-see places to visit around the globe.
